Alec Baldwin reaches settlement with family of woman shot on ‘Rust’ set

Alec Baldwin, who fatally shot his Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins on set with what he thought was a prop gun, has reached a settlement with her family out of court.

Hutchins, along with director Joel Souza were both shot by a Colt gun during the filming of “Rust” as they were rehearsing a scene.

Baldwin issued a statement on Instagram to confirm that a settlement had been reached, although details of the settlement have not been disclosed.

“We are pleased to announce today the settlement of the civil case filed on behalf of the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins,” Baldwin said in an Instagram post, per the New York Post.

“Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son,” he said.

Baldwin, who was both an actor and producer in “Rust,” maintains that he was informed the gun was safe and denies pulling the trigger. An FBI report sais that the gun could not have gone off otherwise. 

Production of “Rust” will resume in January, the production team said in a statement Wednesday, with Hutchins’ husband Matthew Hutchins assuming the role of executive producer.

“I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin,” Matthew Hutchins said in the statement. “All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident.”

According to Matthew Hutchins, “all the original principal players” will be returning to the set in January.

“Rust” director Joel Souza, who was shot in the shoulder in the incident, said he would devote his work on the film “to honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud.”

“Though certainly bittersweet, I am pleased that together, we will now complete what Halyna and I started,” Souza said.

Investigators in New Mexico have not yet filed any criminal charges, however they have not ruled out doing so either.

The New Mexico Environment Department lashed out at the production team and accused them of showing “plain indifference to recognized hazards associated with use of firearms on set.”
