Mass COVID-19 vaccination site in Colorado shut down due to alleged adverse reactions to vaccines

A mass COVID-19 vaccination site at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado hosting a ‘Vaccines for All’ event was shut down last week after 11 people suffered “adverse reactions,” such as nausea and dizziness, after receiving the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Two patients were taken to the hospital for observation, and the other nine were given juice and water by EMTs, according to the state health department. 

Centura Health, which sponsored the event at the park, reported it “followed their protocols and in an abundance of caution, made the decision – in partnership with the state – to pause operations for the remainder of the day.” The issues involved about 0.8% of the 1,700 people who received shots at the site on Wednesday, according to Kevin Massey, a spokesperson for Centura Health. Scott Bookman, the COVID-19 Incident Commander, said “We know it can be alarming to hear about people getting transported to the hospital, and we want to assure Coloradoans that the CDC and public health are closely monitoring all the authorized vaccines continually. Based on everything we know, it remains true that the best vaccine to get is the one you can get the soonest. From what we know, today’s side effects were consistent with what can be expected.”

Officials didn’t elaborate or give updates on the condition of the patient’s in the hospital, however Colorado state health officials say “the state has no reason to believe that people who were vaccinated today at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park should be concerned.” Prior to Wednesday, the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System had recorded 10 reactions at Colorado’s community mass-vaccine sites, according to the state health department. Those unable to receive their shot as a result of the shut down, which is 640 people, will be rescheduled for Sunday. The Pfizer vaccine will be administered to them.
