Portland police officers claim rioters are throwing bottles, rocks, and fireworks at them

On Sunday afternoon in Minnesota, 20-year-old Daunte Wright, an African-American male, was killed after being shot by a police officer during a traffic stop. The incident has sparked backlash nationwide. 

Monday night, the day following the fatal situation, the Portland, Oregon police department declared a riot at the Penumbra Kelly building after protesters broke windows, threw rocks and other objects at police officers, and lit a dumpster on fire. This building houses an office for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and Portland police. Police said reports first came from concerned homeowners, who witnessed people marching through their area stealing rocks and bricks.  The evening began at Laurelhurst Park at a vigil for the victim. After the protesters gathered in memorial of Wright, they marched from the park to the scene of the riot, according to Mike Baker from The New York Times. Once the group of around 200 people arrived on scene, some officers exited the building and had fireworks thrown at them. Independent journalists who were present reported that munitions were fired at some demonstrators after the dumpster fire was started. In response to the breaking of building windows, officers deployed flashbangs.

At 10:00pm, Portland police said bottles, rocks, and fireworks had been thrown at them throughout the evening. The crowd was warned about the use of munitions if “criminal behavior does not cease.” Police declared the situation a riot and ordered the crowd to disperse at around 10:30pm. At the same time this riot was happening, a group was cutting through a chain-link fence to gain access to the parking lot of a historic building, which houses the Portland Police Bureau traffic offices. The suspects had vandalized police cars, smashing the windows and slashing the tires.
