Labrador Retrievers no longer America’s favorite dog breed

The Labrador retriever’s reign as the most popular dog breed in the United States, which lasted just over 3 decades, has been brought to an end.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) confirmed that the French Bulldog now occupies the top spot.

Gina DiNardo, who is AKC’s executive secretary, spoke of the French Bulldog’s rise in popularity.

“The French bulldog has seen a surge in popularity over the years, and for good reason.  Frenchies are playful, adaptable, loyal and outgoing. They make wonderful companions for a variety of people, but it’s extremely important to do your research to not only find the right breed for your lifestyle, but to ensure that you’re getting a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder.”

“They’re comical, friendly, loving little dogs,” Patty Sosa, who is the spokesperson for French BullDog Club of America.

Sosa went on to say that with the French Bulldog’s minimal grooming needs and being able to adapt to living in a city, “they offer a lot in a small package.”

Carrie Stefaniak, who is Wisconsin-based veterinarian and is on the Frenchie club’s health committee, did caution that “French bulldogs can be a polarizing topic.”

Stefaniak stated that this breed can encounter breathing difficulties and that any would-be owners should do due diligence to ensure they can afford any treatment, if necessary.

Stefaniak did say that if they are cared for properly, they can be very fit and active dogs.

“These dogs can be very fit, can be very active,” Stefaniak said. “They don’t have to be sedentary dogs that can’t breathe.”
