On Monday, the US Soccer Federation announced that former coach Gregg Berhalter remains in the running to return to his position.
Berhalter was recently investigated for an incident where he kicked his wife Rosalind twice in January 1992.
U.S. Soccer issued a statement on Monday to confirm that the investigation had concluded. The investigation was carried out by Jenny Kramer, BJay Pak and Chris Marquardt of law firm Alston & Bird,
The investigation’s findings showed that Berhalter physically assaulted Rosalind (née Santana) outside of a bar in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, after Rosalind punched Gregg in the face. The couple met when they were freshmen at the University of North Carolina.
“The Sporting Director will lead the process of determining who will serve as head coach of the Men’s National Team,” the statement read. “Given the investigators’ conclusion that there is no legal impediment to employing him, Gregg Berhalter remains a candidate to serve as head coach of the Men’s National Team.”
The Berhalters also released a statement with their recollection of the event.
The statement said “One night, while out drinking at a local bar, Rosalind and I had a heated argument that continued outside. It became physical and I kicked her in the legs.”
Berhalter said Rosalind “wanted nothing to do” with him immediately after the incident but they met seven months later to rebuild their relationship. The couple have now been together for 25 years.
Nothing in the investigation contradicted what the Berhalters said in their own statement.
Anthony Hudson took on the role of US soccer coach as a caretaker coach until a permanent appointment is made.
