NYPD arrests sole suspect in subway shooting, may face life in prison

New York City Police have taken into custody a man who is suspected of shooting 10 commuters in an attack that took place during rush hour at a Brooklyn subway station.

According to police reports, Frank James, 62-years-old, apparently put on a construction worker’s helmet, vest, and a gas mask prior to throwing smoke grenades and shooting.

After the attack, a 30-hour manhunt took place. James was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan once police received a tip-off, they reported. Mayor Eric Adams made an announcement over video during a news conference: “My fellow New Yorkers: we got him.”

Officials noted that James was the only suspect in the shooting that occurred at Brooklyn’s 36th Street station on Tuesday morning. Twenty-three people were wounded in the attack, 10 of them were wounded from gunfire.

The incident revived calls to confront violence in the transit system of the city. New York’s police commissioner, Keechant Sewell, said that James was arrested “without incident,” adding that “there was nowhere left for him to run,” she said.

Police did not respond to any questions about the person who called in the tip, but the Associated Press and CNN have reported that the suspect was the one who called police to his location in lower Manhattan.

Authorities have added that James will be charged on several counts, including the violation of federal law prohibiting “terrorist and other violent attacks” against mass transit systems. If found guilty, James could face life in prison.

According to police, he had nine prior arrests, and he had connections to Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
