Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey receives NRA endorsement after signing repeal of concealed carry permit law

Gov. Kay Ivey received the endorsement of the National Rifle Association today in her bid for reelection.

Ivey joined NRA state director Art Thomm at a news conference at the Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club, which is a sporting clays complex in Montgomery.

The endorsement comes a month after Ivey signed into law a bill to repeal Alabama’s requirement for a permit to carry a concealed handgun. The NRA lobbied for the bill, which the Republican-led Legislature passed, despite opposition from the Alabama Sheriffs Association, some others in law enforcement, and the majority from Democratic lawmakers.

“Nowhere in our constitution does it say you can keep and bear arms as long as you pay for a permit,” Ivey said. “That’s why this bill was so important. And I appreciate all that the NRA and responsible gun owners across the state did to help get it across the line.”

Thomm said Ivey has been a consistent supporter of gun owners’ rights during her long career as a public official. “She has always demonstrated an unwavering support for every sportsman, competitive shooter. and Second Amendment, law-abiding gun owner.”

Alabama is one of 24 states to allow carrying a concealed handgun without a permit, according to the NRA.

Indiana also passed a law last month to join that group. The other states are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
