Young Douglas teen pleads guilty in migrant transport case

A young teen boy, at 14-years-old in Douglas (Arizona) has pleaded guilty to juvenile charges resulting from a March incident in which authorities have reported the boy backed into a Border Patrol vehicle while carrying two migrants who had entered the country illegally.

The boy had previously been charged as an adult. Now, the boy, who remains nameless as a minor in the court system, pleaded guilty in juvenile court recently to charges of felony fleeing and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, according to Deputy County Attorney Doyle Johnstun.

Johnstun added that the boy’s sentencing had been set for April 18 with the added stipulation that he be kept in the state Department of Juvenile Correction. That agency is able to hold juveniles until they reach the age of 18.

At the time the young boy had been arrested, which took place on March 4, Cochise County officials noted that they believed he was the youngest so-called load driver to ever have been arrested in the county.

Still, an even younger 14-year-old was also recently detained while apparently attempting to illegally ferry migrants into the United States, according to reports by the Herald-Review. 

Cochise County officials say that load drivers are a public safety hazard as they drive at high speeds and are specifically instructed to avoid police.
