New Jersey man charged in violent crime spree made antisemitic remarks, group says

On Sunday, New Jersey elected leaders as well as police held a press conference in order to denounce the hate that reportedly led a man to violently attack members in the community.

27-year-old Dion Marsh has been accused of attacking three Jewish men in a string of crimes that began with a Friday carjacking that took place in Lakewood.

The hate that motivated Marsh’s attacks and crimes thoroughly concerned residents of New Jersey, whose governor condemned the actions and offered his personal support. So far, an investigation into the spree has investigators asking whether the driver responsible attacked random Jewish people purposefully with the intent to kill them.

“The anti-Semitic acts that happened Friday night should never happen anywhere, especially in a town like Lakewood,” said Mayor Raymond Coles on Sunday.

The alleged crime spree purported by Marsh started in Lakewood around 1 in the afternoon when he carjacked a Toyota Camry from its driver near the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Pine Street.

Video footage seems to show the moments just following the carjacking as Marsh turns a corner in the vehicle with its driver clinging to the side. The violence then escalated when police said Marsh struck a pedestrian later that evening at Central Avenue and Carlton Avenue. Police added that the victim’s condition is stable, although the extent of his injuries is unknown.

Before 7 p.m., police noted that Marsh stabbed a man in the chest, and the victim was then taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center facing critical injuries. Marsh struck once again before he was finally arrested, according to police. He ran over another pedestrian who was then rushed to JSUMC with critical injuries.

“Our hearts do go out to the victim, the three individuals who are very seriously wounded, and our prayers go out to them,” said Rep. Chris Smith. “Justice has to be done and there has got to be a chilling effect on this kind of hatred that is absolute.” So far, the exact motivation for his actions is under investigation.
