Obama scales back birthday celebration amid increased COVID-19 cases, criticism from conservatives

On Monday, it was reported the Obama was planning to hold a large 60th Birthday party for himself at Martha’s Vineyard, but recent developments have led to the former President scaling back the celebration.

The Daily Wire reported that an Obama insider claimed there were 475 confirmed guest which included a list of celebrities and another 200+ staff that would be working the celebration. The news of the massive party caused immediate criticism from the right, with the Daily Wire’s Piers Morgan calling it “shamefully selfish” and “incredibly reckless.” On Wednesday, the former President and his wife decided to scale back the event to include only family and some close friends.

Obama’s spokesperson, Hannah Hankins, released the following statement: “Due to the new spread of the delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends. President Obama is appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon.”

This comes after the CDC urged people to wear masks indoors whether they had been vaccinated against Covid-19 or not and as new concerns rise about the Delta variant. According to White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, Joe Biden never planned out attending the former President’s birthday party.
