Republican-led investigation claims to prove COVID-19 leaked from Wuhan lab as early as September 2019

A GOP investigation into the origin of COVID-19 claims to prove the virus leaked from labs at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

Representative Michael McCaul and leader of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, published a third piece of his investigation. The document reads, “Based on the material collected and analyzed by the Committee Minority Staff, the preponderance of evidence suggests SARS-CoV-2 was accidentally released from a Wuhan Institute of Virology laboratory sometime prior to September 12, 2019.” According to the investigation, “There is ample proof that the virus could have been genetically manipulated.”

In recent months, the Biden administration opened an investigation into the origins of COVID-19, and global public health agencies claimed it was “premature” to rule out the lab leak theory. For the last year, the theory circulated on social media only to be met with censorship and accusations of being a conspiracy theory.

Recent reports show Dr. Anthony Fauci’s agency granted millions of dollars to the WIV, in particular for studies relating to bat viruses. In June, a British study of the matter also concluded that COVID-19 originated in the Wuhan lab.
