Chicago surpasses 460 shooting incidents in July, city police report

The number of shooting incidents across Chicago for the month of July and the past seven months of the year have outpaced that of last year, police officials say.

The Chicago Police Department reports 461 shootings and 614 shooting victims in the month of July. July 2020 recorded 402 shooting incidents and 561 shooting victims. There have been 1,973 shooting incidents and 2,471 shooting victims this year and 1,779 incidents and 2,217 victims last year.

Chicago police also report 105 murders across the city in July, slightly below that of last July, which was 107. Last year at this time 446 murders occurred for the first seven months of the year and 445 murders this year. Police officials report approximately 90 percent of murders this year are attributed to gun violence.

This year there have also been 36 Chicago police officers shot at and 9 of them struck by the gunfire. Police officers have recovered more than 7,289 guns this year, which is 28% more than what it was at this time last year. This also included 368 assault weapons. The Chicago police department could recover more than 12,000 guns by end of the year (FOX).
