Grand Jury will hear evidence as part of criminal probe into Donald Trump and Trump Organization

New York prosecutors have convened a special grand jury to consider evidence in a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business dealings, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The development signals that the Manhattan district attorney’s office was moving toward seeking charges as a result of its two-year investigation, which included a lengthy legal battle to obtain Trump’s tax records. The panel was convened recently and will sit three days a week for six months, according to the Post. It is not yet clear when, or even if, the grand jury will be asked to consider returning any indictments. Mr Vance has been looking into Mr Trump’s business practices before he was president, including examining whether he or his companies manipulated the value of assets to gain favorable loan terms and tax benefits. The New York attorney general’s office earlier on Tuesday confirmed that it is conducting a criminal investigation into Mr Trump’s business empire, expanding what had previously been a civil probe.

“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the company is no longer purely civil in nature,” Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for Attorney General Letitia James, said in a statement. “We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA,” Mr Levy said. A spokesman for Mr Trump and an attorney for the Trump Organization did not respond to requests for comment. The former president has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
