Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wins second term in Canadian national elections Tuesday despite image-tarnishing scandals

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 47, won a second term in Canadian national elections Tuesday, yet his Liberal party failed to form a majority government despite surprisingly strong results. According to The Telegraph, his liberal party only managed to secure 33 percent of the national Canadian vote – the lowest a government has ever held in Canadian history – and only won 157 seats – just a baker’s dozen short of the 170 needed for a party to form a majority. In contrast, the Andrew Scheer-led Conservative opposition received 35 percent of the national vote and 121 seats. According to many sources, Trudeau’s close run election can be seen partially as an effect of two scandals that left his “clean-cut” image tarnished earlier this year. ~

Justin Trudeau was elected Prime Minister of Canada in 2015 and reasserted liberalism in the nation after almost a decade of Conservatism governing. Son of former liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, some of Justin Trudeau’s accomplishments include attempting to find a balance between the economy and the environment, introducing a carbon tax to fight climate change, legalizing cannabis, and negotiating a free trade deal between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. These accomplishments have faced criticism from both the left and the right, and have been especially hindered due to two major scandals that were unearthed earlier this year about the Prime Minister. The most recent scandal occurred during his election campaign in which a compilation of photos revealed Trudeau wearing blackface before he took office. The more complex of the two scandals, which occurred earlier this year, had to do with former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould who laid out claims that Prime Minister Trudeau unlawfully “pressured her to halt the prosecution of a Quebec company,” (The Telegraph, 2019). ~

Trudeau’s opponent, Andrew Scheer, 40, is a career conservative politician who sought to reverse many of Trudeau’s progressive policies. In his concession speech Tuesday, Scheer stated, “Tonight Conservatives have put Justin Trudeau on notice. And Mr. Trudeau, when your government falls, Conservatives will be ready and we will win.” ~
