Impeachment tensions escalate as President Trump appears to acknowledge Sunday that he accused Joe Biden of corruption during a phone call in July with the leader of Ukraine

According to The New York Times, President Donald Trump appeared to acknowledge Sunday that he accused former Vice President and Democratic candidate for President Joe Biden of corruption during a phone call with newly elected Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July. Allegations regarding the phone call, which reportedly took place on July 25, centered on whether President Trump implicitly or explicitly pressured Ukraine’s newly elected leader to assist in damaging Biden’s election bid, and whether he used United States military aid as leverage. Although the exact contents of the phone call remains unknown, the President’s revelation regarding the incident severely escalated pressure on Democrats to open an impeachment inquiry. ~

According to the Los Angeles Times, these tensions follow a whistleblower complaint that spurred controversy last week. The complaint, according to multiple news reports, “raised concerns that Trump abused his powers by pressuring the government of the former Soviet republic to investigate Hunter Biden — the former vice president’s son who did business there,” (Los Angeles Times, 2019). After the President’s administration refused to hand over the complaint, Democrats quickly escalated to calls for a full investigation. According to a congressional statute, if a whistleblower complaint within the intelligence community is deemed urgent and credible by the community’s inspector general, which this complaint was, then the President’s administration is required to turn the complaint over to congress. ~

President Trump defended the phone conversation he had, stating Sunday morning that “We had a great conversation,” and described the conversation as “Perfect.” Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, the Intelligence Committee chairman, on the other hand, said that “I have been very reluctant to go down the path of impeachment. But if the president is essentially withholding military aid at the same time he is trying to browbeat a foreign leader into doing something illicit, providing dirt on his opponent during a presidential campaign, then that may be the only remedy that is coequal to the evil that that conduct represents.” ~
