Jay Inslee, the reigning governor of Washington, announced on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” Wednesday night that he will be withdrawing from the 2020 presidential race because “it’s become clear” that he will not have a chance at winning the Democratic primary. Just the third Democratic candidate to end his presidential bid, Inslee, 68, was preceded by the dropouts of Representative Swalwell of California last month and former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper last week. ~
Governor Inslee’s campaign was highlighted by his climate advocacy and his pleas for American politicians to take climate change more seriously. According to Fox News, Jay Inslee “had urged the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to host a debate centered exclusively on climate change — only to fail to qualify to meet polling thresholds needed to attend the party’s upcoming regularly scheduled debate, as well as a CNN town hall dedicated to global warming.” Inslee is also known for his criticism of President Donald Trump and the Republican party, calling the president a “white nationalist” and arguing that “it is sad not only that he (Trump) has done that but worse that the Republican Party has enabled it. They’re complicit in his racism and his white nationalism because they will not speak against it,” (Fox News, 2019). Governor Inslee had met one of the two main criteria to qualify for next month’s DNC debate – 130,000 unique donors – but was unable to reach 2% polling in any of four qualified national polls. ~
The announcement that Inslee will be withdrawing from the 2020 presidential race came just hours after his campaign released a six policy proposal on climate change. According to NBC News, two sources close to Governor Inslee told NBC that he will be announcing Thursday morning via email to his supporters that he will be running for a third term as Governor of Washington. ~
