Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rosselló resigns Wednesday evening after weeks of outcry

Governor Ricardo Rosselló, a Democrat and member of Puerto Rico’s pro-statehood New Progressive Party, announced his resignation Wednesday amid weeks of public outcry in response to the leak of almost 900 pages of “vulgar messages” between Governor Rosello and his advisors, as well as the recent indictments of two former high-ranking government officials. The resignation occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time. ~

According to the Wall Street Journal, massive demonstrations consisting of hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans calling for the governors resignation, the most recent and largest one occurring Monday, had the biggest effect on the Governor’s decision to resign after the governor originally stated Sunday he would not carry out such an action. Protestors displayed their extreme disapproval for messages revealed in the 900 page leak, which local media claim to have included antigay, sexist, and violent conversations. The governor’s resignation also comes amidst a societal struggle to recover from the 2017 Hurricane Maria and the government’s supreme-court-supervised bankruptcy. ~

The Governor’s resignation will be effective beginning August 2 at 5:00 p.m., with Secretary of Justice Wanda Vázquez being the next in line to replace Mr. Rosselló as Governor. Although the Secretary of State would typically be next in line for governorship, the former Secretary of State was one of several officials who recently resigned. Governor Ricardo Rosselló, stating on behalf of his resignation, stated Wednesday, “I gave the maximum, dedicating day and night, weekends and holidays to meet the needs of my people. I feel that to continue in this position presents difficulty for the success that we have achieved to endure.” ~
