President Hassan Rouhani of Iran calls the White House “mentally retarded” Tuesday in response to U.S. sanctions against Iranian Leadership 

According to Fox News, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry by the name of Abbas Mousavi said that the new U.S. sanctions against Iranian leadership meant “permanently closing the channel of diplomacy” between the U.S. and Iran. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also noted Tuesday that the White House is “afflicted by mental retardation.” ~

This fiery response by the Iranian President comes in response to the newly announced sanctions by President Trump on Monday. The sanctions were announced as a retaliation effort against Iran for its shooting down of an unmanned American drone over international waters at the Strait of Hormuz. ~

In response to the inflammatory remarks, President Trump announced Tuesday that any attack on anything American would result in “great and overwhelming force” by the U.S. against Iran, according to the Washington Post. Although Iranian officials claim that the newly announced sanctions ended any possibilities of diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran, White House national security adviser John Bulton called for Iran to negotiate a new agreement to replace the previous 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal – a deal in which Trump withdrew from last year and responded with increased sanctions on Iranian industries and organizations (Wall Street Journal, 2019). ~
