According to the Wall Street Journal, the House Judiciary Committee’s planned hearing with former special counsel Robert Mueller is to be delayed from its original date of July 17 to July 24. Jerrold Nadler (D., N.Y.), the Judiciary Chairman, has been openly negotiating with Mr. Mueller’s team for a “longer questioning session” in order to allow for more Democratic members to ask questions, which the new date could allow for (Wall Street Journal, 2019). The two hours of time that was originally allotted for questioning on July 17 was believed to be an insufficient amount of time for a testimony that both democrats and republicans believe is incredibly important for the future of the Trump Administration. ~
Mueller, the former Special Counsel who recently conducted an investigation on President Trump and possible Russian interference in the 2016 election, had originally agreed to appear before the Democrat-led House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees on July 17, with both committees looking to use the hearing to learn more about President Trump’s possible Russian ties and more information that wasn’t specified or mentioned in the original Mueller Report, Fox News states. ~
According to the Wall Street Journal, the public testimony of Robert Mueller is said by democrats to be “crucial to their goal of educating the public about Russian interference in the 2016 election and the information in the report on President Trump’s efforts to stifle the related federal investigation.” The suspected goal of the testimony for many democrats is to build public support for opening up impeachment inquiry on President Donald Trump. In contrast, a lawyer for President Trump by the name of Jay Sekulow, said in a statement that “Bob Mueller has already stated that his report is his testimony. We now expect that his testimony on July 17 will be his report. In that report, he concluded that there was no collusion or conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia. We also expect that he will have to answer questions regarding some of the irregularities that took place during his investigation, not the least of which involve Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.” ~
The new date for the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing with Mr. Mueller leaves the future of the House Intelligence Committee hearing with the former special counsel that was also planned for July 17 uncertain. ~
