According to the Wall Street Journal, President Trump criticized Kim Darroch, a senior career diplomat and the British ambassador to Washington D.C. since 2016, for the third successive day on Tuesday, calling him “very stupid” and “wacky.” His tweet Tuesday stated that “The wacky Ambassador that the U.K. foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy,” and then added, “I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool.” ~
These comments from the President come in response to leaked diplomatic cables sent by Kim Darroch in which the ambassador describes the Trump administration as “clumsy” and “inept.” According to the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, Darroch also criticized the Trump administration’s policies on Iran and trade. ~
Darroch was disinvited from a function on Monday at the White House and will elect not to attend a British trade delegation event on Tuesday as originally planned. According to British Prime Minister Theresa May, who spoke about the issue at a cabinet meeting Tuesday morning, ambassador Darroch reportedly still has full support from the British government. U.K. officials have been in contact with the White House over the issue, stating that “We have made clear to the U.S. how unfortunate this leak is and that the extracts were selective and do not reflect the closeness of our relationship.” ~
According to the Wall Street Journal, President Trump’s comments about the ambassador are likely to cause an early dilemma of U.S.- U.K. relations for the next British prime minister, which will be announced on July 23. ~
