According to the Wall Street Journal, President Trump is hosting a revamped Fourth of July celebration at the Lincoln memorial featuring a Presidential speech by President Trump, a display of military equipment, and a series of flyovers by military planes. There will also be a VIP ticketed area that will have “family, friends, government officials, campaign aides and troops” (Wall Street Journal). The traditional firework display, parade, and concert are being donated by two private companies. The event is free and open to the public. ~
The “Salute to America” display comes in celebration of the 243rd anniversary of American Independence. Independence day in the U.S. is a federal holiday commemorating the Declaration of Independence of the United States on July 4, 1776, in which the Continental Congress stated that the United States of America should be free from British rule and would furthermore be united, free, and independent states. ~
Although President Trump claims the production will be a “show of a lifetime,” many critics are demanding to see the price tag for the event, and claim that President Trump is politicizing the Independence day event which they claim is usually a bipartisan celebration. Mr. Trump responded to these remarks via twitter, stating that “The cost of our great Salute to America tomorrow will be very little compared to what it is worth. We own the planes, we have the pilots, the airport is right next door (Andrews), all we need is the fuel. We own the tanks and all. Fireworks are donated by two of the greats. Nice!” Although the White House has not provided any cost estimates, the pentagon claims that it will be able to do so sometime next week. The overall cost will include paying for around 500 ceremonial troops, transporting military vehicles and airplanes and the fuel needed for such transport, and other expenses needed to carry out the extravaganza. ~
