Ferrero North America has recalled Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs from UK stores after a salmonella outbreak had been detected.
Additionally, Kinder Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treat baskets are being voluntarily recalled.
According to BBC, the salmonella outbreak was discovered in a factory earlier this week and the recall came shortly after. The company announced that the contaminated chocolate was manufactured in Belgium and emphasized that no other Kinder or Ferrero products in the US were affected by the recall.
In its latest statement, the company said, “Ferrero is cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration on reported cases of Salmonella in Europe.”
The recall has extended to some parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore, following the UK recall of Kinder Surprise chocolate egg products. The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) already advised people to not eat 20g or three-pack eggs with best before dates between July 11th and October 7th, 2022.
Ferrero said that it had taken a “precautionary decision” to voluntarily recall these products in the UK and Ireland with best before dates between April 20 and August 21, 2022.
The recall comes as more than 60 people in the UK were infected with salmonella that was linked to the Kinder Surprise treats. So far, no deaths have been reported. Most of those infected were young children.
