Democrat lawmakers call for recusals from Justice Thomas in light of wife’s texts to Mark Meadows

This week, several Democrat lawmakers called for Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from any and all cases related to the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack due to his wife Ginni’s text messages to Trump advisor Mark Meadows urging the Trump administration to overturn the 2020 election.

Texts between Ginni Thomas and Meadows, published this week by the Washington Post, show the Justice’s wife urgently prompting the Trump administration to take action to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, saying, “You are the leader, with [Trump], who is standing for America’s constitutional governance at the precipice. The majority knows Biden and the Left is attempting the greatest Heist of our History.”

In another text, Thomas suggested the White House take Trump attorney Sidney Powell’s advice and, “release the Kraken and save us from the left taking America down,” referring to nonexistent evidence of false claims of widespread voter fraud.

Senator Ron Wyden (D-Or.) is one Democrat lawmaker calling for Justice Thomas to recuse himself from Trump-related cases. “At the bare minimum, Justice Thomas needs to recuse himself from any case related to the January 6th investigation, and should Donald Trump run again, any case related to the 2024 election,” Wyden said in a Friday statement

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine pointed out in a Tweet on Friday that Thomas had already crossed the line by not recusing himself from the hearing over whether the National Archives could hand over documents from Trump’s time in office to the January 6 investigative committee.

“Justice Thomas was the sole member of the Supreme Court who would have allowed records from Trump, Meadows, et al to be withheld from House Jan 6 Committee. He did not explain his reasoning. We need answers,” Kaine wrote. Justice Thomas and his wife have not commented publicly on the matter.
