Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau strikes surprise deal to keep power until 2025

Canada’s Liberal Party and opposition New Democratic party (NDP) have struck a surprise deal that would keep the minority government in power until 2025.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the surprise agreement on Tuesday.
According to WION, minority governments usually last an average of two year years, but this agreement would allow it to last the entire four-year term. Trudeau said, “What this means is that during this uncertain time, the government can function with predictability and stability, present and implement budgets, and get things done for Canadians.”
The two parties published the agreement. The Liberal party has agreed to back a national dental-care program for low income Candaians. They will also be moving forward on a national prescription-drug coverage program. These are both campaign pledges for the NDP.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh had previously ruled out making a deal with the Liberals, Reuters reported. Six months ago, Singh said he would only support Trudeau on a case-by-case basis. The agreement between the two parties also includes plans to phase out financing for the fossil fuel sector, beginning this year.
Singh spoke to reporters saying, “We have a document… that will be used to analyze and verify the government’s actions. We will use our power to help people.”
