GOP congressman to file articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary for border crisis

Friday, Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona (R) announced that he intends on filing articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in response to the handling of the southern border crisis.

Biggs said in a statement, “Secretary Mayorkas is a threat to the sovereignty and security of our nation. As a result of his actions and policies, America is more in danger today than when he began serving as Secretary.” The U.S – Mexico border has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of migrants attempting to cross over into the United States, and the situation has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon. While both Republicans and Democrats have placed blame on a variety of factors, any effort to decrease the numbers of migrants crossing the border has not made an impact.

Health and Human Services announced Thursday that 834 unaccompanied children had reached the border in one day. The border city of McAllen, TX has had to set up and expand their shelters to handle any COVID positive migrants released by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). For the month of July, CBP data showed that more than 210,000 migrants have been apprehended, a 20 year high, with many of those being removed until Title 42 public health protections. Title 42 allows for the rapid expulsion of migrants and has since been extended by the Biden administration.

Biggs said in his statement, “Under his direction, DHS is systematically releasing COVID-19 positive aliens into our communities, subjecting the American people to unnecessary and avoidable risks. Secretary Mayorkas is failing to faithfully uphold his oath of office and is presiding over a reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement, at the expense of the U.S. Constitution and the security of the United States.” After Biggs’ announcement, other Republican representatives have joined his call for the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas.
