Contrary to recent CDC guidelines, California will require schools to mandate masks in the fall.
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidelines encouraging schools to resume in-person learning, suggesting vaccinated students and teachers do not need to wear masks. The guidelines read, “CDC recommends schools maintain at least 3 feet of physical distance between students within classrooms, combined with indoor mask wearing by people who are not fully vaccinated, to reduce transmission risk.” However, California will require all students and teachers to wear a mask, vaccinated or not.
According to the state, this requirement will allow for in-person learning while treating everyone equally. California Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary Mark Ghaly said, “At the outset of the new year, students should be able to walk into school without worrying about whether they will feel different or singled out for being vaccinated or unvaccinated – treating all kids the same will support a calm and supportive school environment.”
The majority of California schools have operated remotely or on a hybrid schedule since March of 2020. A slow reopening process has created more opposition towards Governor Gavin Newsom, who is up for recall on September 14th. FBA reported, “The effort to boot Newsom from the Governor’s mansion was started last year primarily by the state’s conservative Republicans. However, it quickly gained support following Newsom’s COVID-19 restrictions, especially after he was spotted dining with friends at The French Laundry, a Napa Valley eatery whilst urging Californians to stay at home.”
