Disney+ holds first virtual pride celebration: ‘This Is Me’

Disney+ has created its first virtual variety show called “This Is Me: Pride Celebration Spectacular” in tune with the end of Pride Month.

The show premiered on June 27th and can be viewed on YouTube. Showcased in the celebration is Disney’s “community of LGBTQ+ creators, employees, and fans.” Every featured performance is described as being “reinterpreted through a LGBTQ+ lens.” Nina West, a drag queen who previously hosted a children’s show about Pride Month, led the show.

The performances included Alex Newell from Glee, singer Hayley Kiyoko, Muppet character Kermit the Frog, and more. The production team included members of the Disney Music Group and the Disney PRIDE Employee Resource Group. Almost all contributors were part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Global head of Marketing and Content Curation for Disney+, Joe Earley, said,“At Disney+, we believe in the power of inclusive storytelling to bring us together and inspire us to live authentically. We are committed to amplifying the voices of our LGBTQ+ creators and talent, and platforming content that reminds people to love loud – and sing louder – in this special event.”
