George W. Bush says ‘Iranian influence’ is behind Hamas attacks on Israel

Former President George W. Bush told Fox News in an interview that Iran helped spur the Hamas terrorist group to attack Israel.

He said that what “you’re seeing playing out is Iranian influence targeted toward Israel” (NY Post). “I think the best approach with regard to Iran is to understand that their influence is dangerous for world peace,” the former president said. “They are very much involved with extremist movements in Lebanon and Syria and Yemen, and they are aiming to spread their influence.” Bush was commenting on the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. According to USA Today, “Palestinian militants in Gaza have launched hundreds of rockets into Israel, and the Israeli military has carried out a stream of airstrikes targeting what it says are Hamas’ military installations.”

Hamas is the largest Palestinian militant Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip, a self-governing Palestinian territory on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea (BBC). Since May 28, 28 Palestinians were killed in Gaza mostly by Israeli airstrikes. The Israeli army said that at least 16 of the dead were militants. Additionally, three Israeli women were killed in Hamas strikes in Ashkelon and Tel Aviv (USA Today).

Bush also commented on the efforts by the Biden administration to form a nuclear deal with Iran. “Any deal that is done has got to not only focus on its nuclear capabilities, but also its influence in the Middle East,” Bush said. “And you know, any deal, you’ve got to keep in mind the dangers of an aggressive Iran to our allies, and to stability, so it has to be a comprehensive look” (NY Post).
