First Lady Jill Biden visited a Covid-19 vaccination clinic in Virginia on Monday, the first of many on her nationwide tour to encourage parents to vaccinate their children.
She visited Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia where she was joined by Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. She will be visiting vaccine clinics throughout the nation on her tour after the White House approved administering the Covid-19 vaccine to children aged 5-11.
After touring the vaccine clinic being held in the gym of Franklin Sherman Elementary, she spoke to parents in the cafeteria. “The vaccine is the best way to protect your children against COVID-19. It’s been thoroughly reviewed and rigorously tested. It’s safe. It’s free. And it’s available for every child in this country, five and up.”
In addition, school districts across the nation will be receiving letters that jointly come from Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. The letter will push for districts to be a part of the vaccine push by organizing vaccine clinics for their students. School districts will have access to “tools to help schools partner with pharmacies to administer shots”.
The Biden administration is also asking districts to provide information on vaccine details, processes, and benefits, as well as “counter[ing] disinformation”. Now that the vaccine is available for children aged 5-11, the Biden administration has secured vaccines for the approximately 28 million newly eligible children.
“Parenthood and worrying go hand-in-hand — it’s just what we do,” Jill shared in her speech. “So, I can’t promise you that the dangers of the world will become any less frightening. Just wait until your kids start driving! But with this vaccine, we can take away at least one of those worries. A big one.”
