A New York City District Attorney has cleared the majority of riot and looting cases from demonstrations during the summer of 2020.
Despite 485 arrests related to protests following the death of George Floyd, Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. has decided to not prosecute. Vance dropped 222 looting cases, of the other 263 cases, 73 pertained to lesser charges for trespassing, 40 involved juveniles and were sent to family court, and 128 remain open for investigation, according to NY’s WNBC-TV.
“In an internal memo, Vance says there were over 600 commercial burglary arrests in addition to over 3,500 unindicted felony cases in the pipeline waiting to move forward in the courts. His memo says all those cases were on hold because of the pandemic.”
Former NYPD Chief of Patrol Wilbur Chapman critiqued the DA, saying, “If they are so overworked that they can’t handle the mission that they’re hired for, then maybe they should find another line of work. [They] allowed people who committed crimes to go scot free.” The DA’s office has focused prosecution efforts on allegations of tax, loan, and insurance fraud against former President Donald Trump. In May, Vance convened a grand jury to weigh potential charges against Trump.
