U.S Department of Homeland Security officials have revealed that the Biden administration is preparing to provide the COVID-19 vaccines to illegal immigrants in custody due to a surge in illegal crossings and infections.
The DHS is set to vaccinate migrants as soon as they enter the country and while they wait to be processed by U.S Customs and Border Protection. The administration will provide the Johnson & Johnson vaccine since the single-dose is suitable for a transient population that will most likely not get a second dose, DHS officials claimed according to The Washington Post.
While vaccinations will also be provided for migrants facing deportation, the same is not true for migrants who are sent back under the Title 42 public health law. The outlet further reports that currently only a small percentage of migrants at the U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities have received the vaccine but under the administration’s new vaccination plan that percentage is set to rise.
