Through their devastation, raging wildfires have proven the thesis of a seven-month-old documentary surrounding the historic California Camp and Thomas Fires.
“Bring Your Own Brigade”, created by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker, detailed some of the state’s deadliest wildfires. However, those fires have been outrivaled by the ongoing Dixie Fire. Sparking in July of 2021, the Dixie Fire has claimed 253,052 acres and is a mere 35 percent contained, according to CalFire.
Walker commented, “It’s just terrible proof of the thesis of the film. I didn’t mean to be proven right, or to make such a topical film, but that’s where we find ourselves.” Equipment from Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), the nation’s largest utility, might have been involved in starting the big Dixie Fire burning in the Sierra Nevada, as reported to California regulators.
In July, over 60 wildfires were burning across 10 western states, with major blazes in Oregon and California. In a Tweet, Governor Gavin Newsom suggested, “I should just say this with due respect to those that don’t believe in science, you got to believe your own damn eyes, observe the evidence. CA is facing another year of record temperatures and dry weather. Climate change is here.”
