NYC to require all city employees to get vaccinated for COVID-19 or be tested weekly

New York City is requiring all city employees, including police, firefighters, and teachers, to take the COVID-19 vaccination or provide weekly negative tests.

According to the New York Times, the policy would require 340,000 workers to comply by September 13th. Upon the announcement, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said, “This is about our recovery, this is what we need to do to bring back New York City, this is about keeping people safe.”

He went on to suggest all companies should follow the city’s lead, suggesting, “My message to the private sector is to go as far as you can go. I would strongly urge a vaccination mandate whenever possible, or as close to it as possible.” City labor relations commissioner Renee Campion said, “If employees refuse to comply, they just can’t be at work. And in fact, they will not be paid.”

Union workers in NYC have begun to protest vaccine mandates for healthcare workers. The demonstrations mirror similar efforts in Europe. Although thousands have taken the COVID-19 vaccine, none of the products are fully approved by the FDA. Furthermore, reporting of adverse effects and the unknown long-term impacts are leading to vaccine hesitation.
