As the California wildfire season is beginning, Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom and the Biden administration met to discuss the annual wildfires (The Hill).
In a comment about climate science, Newsom said, “I should just say this with due respect to those that don’t believe in science, you got to believe your own damn eyes, observe the evidence.” In a tweet, the governor said, “CA is facing another year of record temperatures and dry weather. Climate change is here. We must do everything in our power to fight it & safeguard our state. Thank you @POTUS for your partnership as we expand efforts & invest historic amounts to suppress and fight wildfires” (Twitter).
Newsom also told Vice President Kamala Harris that climate change “isn’t a Republican or Democratic issue, adding that they can’t just “double down” on the issue” (The Hill). California’s fire season has begun early this year due to the severe drought and record-breaking heat wave affecting the Pacific Northwest.
The California Lava Fire grew to nearly 18,000 acres overnight and is continuing to spread (Axios). Newsom also stated, “We have to have a sense of intentionality and responsibility to radically change our vegetation forest management policies, our suppression policies, our pre-positioning policies” (Axios).
