Fauci says coronavirus Delta variant is the ‘greatest threat’ to the nation’s effort to beat Covid

White House Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci claims the new Delta variant of the coronavirus is the “greatest threat” to America’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The variant was first identified in India and has made its way to the US, now making up over 20 percent of all cases. Two weeks ago, that number was 10 percent. “The transmissibility is unquestionably greater than the wild-type SARS-CoV-2, as well as the Alpha variant.  It is associated with an increased disease severity, as reflected by hospitalization risk, compared to Alpha.  And in lab tests, associated with modest decreased neutralization by sera from previously infected and vaccinated individuals,” reads a White House press briefing.

In an effort to promote vaccination, Fauci said, “… the Delta variant is currently the greatest threat in the U.S. to our attempt to eliminate COVID-19.  Good news: Our vaccines are effective against the Delta variant.” The spread of the Delta strain has been compared to its activity in Europe where the new variant overtook the spread of the previously identified Alpha variant.
