Amid an “alarming influx” in migrants landings in places such as the Florida Keys, Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed an order activating the Florida National Guard.
DeSantis said in a Friday news release that the influx is stretching thin law enforcement in Monroe County, whose jurisdiction comprises most of the 180-mile Florida Keys.
He has placed the blame at the feet of President Joe Biden for failing to address the record-high number of migrant crossings.
“As the negative impacts of Biden’s lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration’s failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis,” DeSantis said on Friday, according to Politico.
He added, “When Biden continues to ignore his legal responsibilities, we will step into support our communities.”
Florida will respond to the migrant landings by deploying “air assets, including airplanes and helicopters from the Florida National Guard, and will bolster Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission marine patrol to support water interdictions,” DeSantis said, adding that they will also “ensure the safety of migrants attempting to reach Florida through the Florida Straits.”
