Former president Donald Trump gave a ringing endorsement of a candidate for the Missouri Republican Senate primary ahead of the election on Tuesday, only he failed to specify exactly which candidate he was endorsing.
“We need a person who will not back down to the Radical Left Lunatics who are destroying our Country,” said Trump in the endorsement statement. “I trust the Great People of Missouri, on this one, to make up their own minds, much as they did when they gave me landslide victories in the 2016 and 2020 Elections, and I am therefore proud to announce that ERIC has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
The endorsement, while highly flattering, fails to distinguish between two GOP candidates whose first names are both Eric. Former Missouri governor Eric Greitens is running in the GOP Senate primary against Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, and Trump’s statement did not say which candidate the former president gave his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”
Apparently the confusion reached the candidates, who both quickly claimed the endorsement for themselves. “Honored to have the support of President Trump! We will MAGA!” wrote Greitens. Shortly after, Schmitt also indicated he believed the endorsement was for him. “It is truly an honor to have President Trump’s endorsement in the Senate race.”
The attorney general said that he is “the only America First candidate in this race,” adding, “I look forward to restoring the America First agenda with you.”
On Tuesday, voters took the polls in the Missouri primary and sent state AG Eric Schmitt on to face Democrat Trudy Busch-Valentine, the heiress to the Busch beer fortune. It remains unclear which Eric former president Trump meant to endorse.
