Pop star Ricky Martin denied allegations this week that he had been in a sexual relationship with his younger nephew, with Martin’s lawyer’s claiming the family member who made the claims is suffering from mental health issues.
Martin’s attorney, Marty Singer, issued a statement this week refuting the claims, saying Martin has “never been — and would never be — involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew.” Singer went on to allege the accuser is not of sound mind.
“Unfortunately, the person who made this claim is struggling with deep mental health challenges,” Singer claimed. “The idea is not only untrue, it is disgusting. We all hope that this man gets the help he so urgently needs. But, most of all, we look forward to this awful case being dismissed as soon as a judge gets to look at the facts.”
A restraining order related to domestic violence was issued against Martin in Puerto Rico earlier this month, though the reasons remained unclear. However, Martin’s brother told Marca Martin’s 21-year old nephew, Dennis Yadiel Sanchez, was the victim, and that the singer had been involved in a sexual relationship with his son for seven months. Eric Martin also claims his brother had “exercised physical and psychological attacks” throughout the relationship with his nephew.
Martin released a statement on Twitter denying the allegations to his followers. “The protection order entered against me is based on completely false allegations, so I will respond through the judicial process with the facts and the dignity that characterize me,” Martin wrote. “Because it is an ongoing legal matter, I cannot make detailed statements at this time. I am grateful for the countless messages of solidarity, and I receive them with all my heart.”
