Former President Donald Trump on Thursday celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.
The high court handed down the 6-3 decision Thursday morning. The ruling does not outlaw abortion, instead it leaves that decision up to individual states, many of which have already enacted bans or strict restrictions.
“This is following the Constitution, and giving rights back when they should have been given long ago,” Trump told Fox News shortly after the decision was announced.
Asked what he thinks the reaction will be among his pro-abortion supporters, Trump said, “I think, in the end, this is something that will work out for everybody.” When asked about his role in the Supreme Court’s ruling, Trump replied: “God made the decision.”
In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, Trump called the court’s decision “the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation.”
Overturning Roe v. Wade, Trump said, was only made possible “because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong Constitutionalists confirmed to the United States Supreme Court.”
“These major Victories prove that even though the Radical Left is doing everything in their power to destroy our Country, your Rights are being protected, the Country is being defended, and there is still hope and time to Save America,” Trump said, adding that he has not ruled out running for president again in 2024.
“Now that Roe vs. Wade has been consigned to the ash heap of history, a new arena in the cause of life has emerged, and it is incumbent on all who cherish the sanctity of life to resolve that we will take the defense of the unborn and the support for women in crisis pregnancy centers to every state in America,” he told Breitbart News.
“Having been given this second chance for life, we must not rest and must not relent until the sanctity of life is restored to the center of American law in every state in the land.”
