Former football star and Trump-endorsed GOP Senate candidate Herschel Walker beat out a crowded field of candidates in the state primary this week.
Walker, who already enjoys something of a celebrity status in Georgia after his football career at University of Georgia and subsequent NFL career, beat out Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and several others this Tuesday and will go on to face off against incumbent Democrat Senator Raphael Warnock in November.
Warnock won the Senate seat in a 2021 special election and beat out his opponent Tamara Johnson-Shealey in the Democratic primary in Georgia this week. While Warnock is popular with Democrats in Georgia, the state remains sharply divided and his seat in the US Senate is vulnerable in the upcoming midterms, especially as Democrats struggle to maintain control of the House and Senate.
In response to Walkerās win, Warnockās campaign manager Quentin Fulks said in a statement, “While Reverend Warnock continues to do the job for all Georgians, Walker has quickly shown Georgians he’s not ready to be a U.S. Senator. As the election continues, our campaign remains confident that when faced with the choice between Reverend Warnock and Walker, Georgians will choose to send Reverend Warnock back to Washington to continue working for them.”
In his victory speech this week, Walker railed against Democrats. āThey donāt even like this country. Itās time for us to wake up from this nightmare, time for us to get up, get back on track,ā he said.
Some Republicans have voiced concerns that Walkerās past controversies may make him vulnerable as a candidate against Warnock in the midterms. Walker has been vocal about his struggle with dissociative identity disorder, has a colorful history of allegations against him including violence against women and inflating business figures. However, GOP leaders like Trump and Mitch McConnell have been supportive of Walkerās campaign.
