The Southern District of New York is investigating whether current Lieutenant Governor of New York, Brian Benjamin, had any knowledge of illegal donations to his failed campaign for city comptroller last year.
While Benjamin has not been accused of anything, illegal donations made to his 2021 campaign arranged by real estate investor and campaign adviser Gerald Migdol has been accused of concocting a scheme to funnel illegal donations to Benjamin’s campaign.
A spokesman for Benjamin’s lieutenant governor campaign said in a statement, “Neither Lt. Gov. Benjamin nor his campaign are being accused of any wrongdoing, and they are prepared to fully cooperate with authorities.”
The statement continued, “As soon as the campaign discovered that these contributions were improperly sourced, they donated them to the Campaign Finance Board, pursuant to guidance obtained from the CFB.”
Benjamin served as a state senator representing parts of Harlem for four years before being appointed lieutenant governor last year by Governor Kathy Hochul when she took over for Andrew Cuomo.
