Donald Trump signals he won’t run with Mike Pence in 2024

In an interview with the Washington Examiner on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump seemed to hint at the fact that former Vice President Mike Pence would likely not be his 2024 running mate if he opts to again seek a second term.

Of the thought of Pence running alongside him, Trump commented, “I don’t think the people would accept it.” 

Trump added that he was “disappointed in Mike” after the former vice president selected not to contest the results of the 2020 presidential election during Congress’ official count of Electoral College votes, which Trump urged him to do.

“Mike thought he was going to be a human conveyor belt, that no matter how fraudulent the votes, you have to send them up to the Old Crow,” Trump said, referencing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) using a nickname.

The former president continued, “But that turned out to be wrong. Because now, as you know, they are feverishly working to try and get it so that the vice president cannot do what Mike said he couldn’t do.”

That comment seemed to be in reference to attempts by lawmakers on Capitol Hill to reform an 1887 election law that goes into detail about how Electoral College votes are counted by Congress. The vice president is the figure assigned with overseeing the count, which has been considered a ceremonious formality historically.

Lawmakers pointed to the mob of pro-Trump supporters who took to the Capitol building on January 6, 2021 in the effort to stop the vote count as a reason to reform the law in order to make it clear that the vice president does not have the authority to change certified Electoral College results.

Pence opposed Trump recently during a Federalist Society event where he outright said that Trump’s assertion that Pence’s role as vice president meant he could contest the election results was “wrong.”
