Former president Trump spoke at a donor retreat in New Orleans this weekend, telling top Republican National Committee donors, criticizing NATO for its failure to intervene in Ukraine as it faces an ongoing onslaught from Russia.
“Are all of these nations going to stand by and watch perhaps millions of people be slaughtered as the onslaught continues?” Trump said. “At what point do countries say, ‘No, we can’t take this massive crime against humanity?’ We can’t let it happen. We can’t let it continue to happen.”
Trump also joked about the war, telling the crowd the United States should “put the Chinese flag” on military jets and “bomb the s***” out of Russia.” The former president continued, “And then we say, China did it,” according to The Washington Post. “Then they start fighting with each other, and we sit back and watch.”
The United States and its NATO allies have thus far ruled out putting boots on the ground in Ukraine for fear of escalating the conflict, but have assisted the Ukrainian military and its people by providing aid and military equipment. NATO countries and others have also placed strict sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
