States surrounding Texas have seen over an 800% increase in abortion patients traveling from Texas. This data comes after the Texas Heartbeat Act went into effect on September 1st, 2021.
According to Politico, the Texas health agency reported earlier this month that state abortions had dropped by over 50% back in September 2021 from a year earlier.
However, data from Aid Access and reports from neighboring states show an increase in Texas patients seeking abortions in surrounding states. Many believe those who are passed 6 weeks of pregnancy and are seeking an abortion are looking to other ways to do sow.
CNN has stated that Planned Parenthood clinics in the five neighboring states to Texas saw nearly an 800% increase in abortion patients from Texas after the Heartbeat Act went into effect.
Oklahoma and Colorado were stated to have seen the largest surge. Between September 1st, 2021 and December 31st, 2021, Texas abortion pateints made up half of the total patient count at Oklahoma Planned Parenthood clinics.
Others are turning to abortion pills. According to a new study in JAMA Network Open, orders for abortion pills spiked 1,180% in the first week after the law went into effect.
Purchases from the international nonprofit Aid Access increased from about 11 purchases a day to over 137. Though orders began to decrease as time passed, purchases still remained about 175% higher than before the Texas Heartbeat Act went into effect.
