The United States State Department has ordered diplomats and their families to depart the US embassy and return to the United States via commercial flights as soon as possible, as fears rise over a possible Russian invasion on Ukraine.
In an internal cable obtained by ABCNews, the State Department advised all US non-emergency and emergency personnel at the US embassy in Kyiv to leave Ukraine aboard any commercial flight and return to the United States.
On Sunday, an updated travel advisory urged all US citizens in Ukraine to leave the country on commercial flights if possible.
“These are prudent precautions that in no way undermine our support for, our commitment to Ukraine,” a senior State Department official said. They added that the State Department changed their travel advisory “based on this military buildup, based on how we see these developments.”
“The security conditions, particularly along Ukraine’s borders, in Russia-occupied Crimea, and in Russia-controlled eastern Ukraine, are unpredictable and can deteriorate with little notice,” the statement from the State Department read.
“U.S. citizens in Ukraine should consider departing now using commercial or other privately available transportation options.”
