Scotland’s biggest newspaper asks readers about their prospects of ‘Covid Internment Camps’

One of Scotland’s most prominent newspapers is asking its readers whether the country should consider introducing “Covid internment camps” as has been done in Australia. The Daily Record posed the question via their official Facebook page.

“Australians are being detained in Covid internment camps for 14 days if they test positive or are suspected positive. Should we follow their lead?” the post asks.

Most of the respondents reacted with anger at what they question suggested. “What a disgrace of a question??? Surely the obvious answer to should there be INTERNMENT CAMPS always be a resounding NO!!!!!” said one user. “This headline is an all time low,” responded another.

But one respondent flipped the idea back on those who asked. Not disagreeing with the general idea of an internment camp, one user wrote, “Yes. We need protection from anyone who thinks this is a good idea. Put them there and some people at this news rag can lead the way.”

Australian authorities have continued building these quarantine camps that will not be completed until the end of March. They have done so in order to prepare for what they call “ongoing operations.” It was reported last month that Australian police had arrested three people who apparently escaped in the middle of the night from a COVID internment camp that was located near Darwin.

After citing new strains of COVID and those “who have not had access to vaccination,” Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles has said, “We anticipate there to be a continuing need for quarantine facilities.”

Currently, Scotland is under COVID restrictions that meant nightclubs were closed for weeks as people were also urged to avoid seeing family over Christmas. Instead, tens of thousands of Scots took a trip over the border to England, a country with more relaxed rules, to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
