Gov. DeSantis responds to criticism of his public absence, says he’s been with his wife as she undergoes cancer treatment

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was with his wife as she underwent cancer treatment during a recent COVID-19 surge in his state, his spokesman has confirmed.

Casey DeSantis, 41, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October and underwent treatment Thursday, the governor’s spokesman told Fox News.

DeSantis, who has been criticised for being absent while his state struggled with a spike in COVID cases, attended a Miami faith event in Florida on New Year’s Eve with his wife Casey, the mother of their three children.

Nikki Fried, who’s running for Florida governor as a Democrat, tweeted that DeSantis “cancelled our Cabinet meeting in the middle of December” and “I haven’t seen him since Dec. 17. I don’t know where he is.” Fried also posted a political ad on Twitter to claim that DeSantis “is absent,” so she is “doing his job in heels.”

MSNBC host Joy Reid also called out DeSantis, questioning his whereabouts and tweeting, “A governor, not governing during a crisis; and sunning his belly on vacation instead. @GovRonDeSantis is the Nero of Ted Cruzes.” Reid added, “And that of course is if he is indeed on vacation, which remains unclear…”

DeSantis Press Secretary Christina Pushaw shot back at Reid on Thursday, responding to her tweet with a snapshot of the governor’s schedule. “Have you ever considered that you’re one of the reasons nobody trusts the media?” Pushaw wrote.

Greg Price also Tweeted in defence of DeSantis “Where is Ron? Taking his wife to cancer treatments.” DeSantis recently received the Defender of Freedom award at ‘Let Us Worship.’ He also tweeted a picture of himself at the event with a pledge to “protect the right to worship and won’t let anyone shut you down.”

A Michigan man tweeted an image of himself with DeSantis, captioned it: “At the Hard Rock Stadium watching the Michigan game with my brother and Ron DeSantis is in our suite!!! He’s got our votes!!!”
