French police have arrested a sword-wielding assailant after he attacked two female police officers Thursday who attempted to question him about a car theft.
“While intervening in a vehicle theft in Cherbourg, two police officers were injured,” French Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin said on social media, according to CNN. “(My) support to the national police.”
“All my support to the forces of order, Cherbourg mayor Arrivé Benoît added, per CNN. “He was neutralized with bullets,” the Cherbourg press office told CNN, however they could not confirm any details about the man’s condition.
Reuters reported the attack occurred around 3:45 p.m. after two police officers were called to the scene of an accident caused by the attacker who was in possession of a stolen vehicle. A spokeswoman said the attack was not believed to be related to terrorism based on immediate evidence, according to the outlet.
The two police officers involved are in good condition, authorities said. Officers reportedly shot the man, whose name and nationality were unavailable, three times after he wounded one officer in the chin and the other in the face. The man was then flown to a hospital in serious condition.
