Following his trial, Kyle Rittenhouse appeared in an interview with Fox News Host Tucker Carlson, where he stated that he is “not a racist person.”
CBS News reports that the 18 year old told Carlson that “this case has nothing to do with race. It never had anything to do with race. It had to do with the right to self defense.” Rittenhouse was 17 when he traveled across state lines into Kenosha, Wisconsin, where protests had turned into destructive riots.
Rittenhouse’s story became tangled in the web of outrage over police use of force against Black people following George Floyd’s death. David Hancock, the spokesman for the Rittenhouse family, said that Rittenhouse was “dragged through the mud” with lies over the past year. After being acquitted, Rittenhouse told Carlson in the interview that, “the jury reached the correct verdict – self-defense is not illegal. I’m glad that everything went well… We made it through the hard part.”
“I’m not a racist person. I support the BLM movement, I support peacefully demonstrating,” Rittenhouse said to Fox News. While the prosecution portrayed that the teen was a “wannabe soldier” looking for trouble, Rittenhouse stood firm in his counter that he acted in self defense. As a result, Second Amendment supporters have rallied behind Rittenhouse.
Rittenhouse’s acquittal has sparked protests and controversy around the country (NBC News). Additionally, he was accused of consuming alcohol with adult men singing the Proud Boys’ anthem while flashing the OK sign. Despite this Rittenhouse and associates have openly said he is not a white supremecist.
“I believe there needs to be change. I believe there’s a lot of prosecutorial misconduct, not just in my case, but in other cases. And it’s just amazing to see how much a prosecutor can take advantage of somebody,” Rittenhouse said.
