A Russian analyst who contributed to the dossier that researched ties between Russia and Donald Trump was arrested on Thursday for allegedly lying to the FBI.
AP News reports that Igar Danchecko lied about his sources of information, and is now part of an investigation into the origins of the FBI’s probe into whether there was conspiracy between Trump and Russia in the 2016 presidential election.
Danchenko received a five-count indictment as a result of making many false statements to the FBI during interviews in 201 about getting information to Christopher Steele. Steele is the former British spy who researched the conspiracy. Danchenk served as a significant source for Steele as he put together the dossier that was eventually turned over to the FBI.
The deception is important because the FBI “devoted substantial resources attempting to investigate and corroborate” the allegations. The dossier played an important role in allowing the FBI to receive warrants.
The indictments point to Danchencko denying any discussions regarding the dossier with an individual who was a Democratic operative and had associations with the Clinton campaign in 2016. These associations would have been crucial because it showed his “reliability, motivations, and potential bias as a source,” the indictment said.
Additionally, it has become clear that Danchecko fabricated his account, and never actually received a phone call from the president of the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce.
Ultimately, the dossier itself was not the reason an investigation was launched into Trump-Russia relations. However, there were questions regarding the accuracy of the information that the FBI was relying on for the investigation. Though there were questionable ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, nothing was evident enough for charges to be filed.
